How to Become a Medical Marijuana Recommending Physician in Ohio

 

Step 1

Qualifications

As a physician you are eligible to apply for a Certificate to Recommend medical marijuana if you:

  • Hold an active, unrestricted MD or DO license from the State Medical Board of O

  • Have been granted access to OARRS

  • Hold an active registration with the DEA

  • Have not been subject to disciplinary action based on inappropriate handling of controlled substances

  • Have no ownership, investment interest, or compensation agreement with a licensed medical marijuana cultivator, processor, testing lab, or dispensary

Step 2

Continuing Education

You must complete 2-hour Continuing Medical Education course approved by the Ohio State Medical Association or the Ohio Osteopathic Association. Your CME will cover diagnosing qualifying conditions, treating medical conditions with marijuana, and possible drug interactions. Please visit the OOA and OSMA websites for course information.

Step 3

Register for your Certificate to recommend

Log into the State Medical Board of Ohio’s eLicense Portal and locate your active MD or DO license. You’ll need proof of your CME course in order to complete the registration. This short video explains in detail how to use the eLicense Portal.

Step 4

State Medical Board approval

The State Medical Board of Ohio will review and approve new CTRs monthly. A full list of physicians with an approved CTR is available on the here.
